ViceVersa is a bilateral workshop for professional and experienced translators of novelry, which Literary Colloquium Berlin (LCB) has been running already for over ten years for different language pairs. The idea of the workshop is to enhance professional skills of experienced translators through collegial discussion on their current translations based on the agenda defined by them on their own (stylistic, esthetics, cultural and historical context, linguistic difficulties, individual characteristics of an author’s style etc.) and strengthening of international translation experience.
«By collective efforts we were able to solve the whole set of issues of translators’ concern, give impetus to creation and correction of a translating strategy as well as strengthen links between translators. Given that promotion of Ukrainian culture abroad is carried out quite irregularly and weakly, it is important for translators from Ukrainian to have more contacts with their Ukrainian colleagues, communicate on professional topics, and particularly improving in such a way their competence with regard to living Ukrainian language and culture,” the workshop leaders commented on results of their work.
Support of contemporary Ukrainian literature is a programme activity run by Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine Foundation. The Foundation is the only organization in Ukraine providing grants for translating modern Ukrainian literature into foreign languages. During 2009-2013 the works of local authors were translated into Czech, Russian, Bulgarian, Polish, French and other world languages.
