In spite of everything, Ukraine will become a future EU star, says Tereziia Yatseniuk at the 2nd Youth Kyiv Security Forum

Ukraine is a future star of the European Union, despite the current government’s decision of this Thursday to suspend the preparations for the signature of the Association Agreement with the EU. This was underscored by Tereziia Yatseniuk, head of the Supervisory Board of Open Ukraine Foundation, in her welcome address at the opening of the 2nd Youth Kyiv Security Forum “Good governance: the only way to the EU”.

“In spite of what happened in our country yesterday, I am certain, as we all are, that Ukraine is and will be a star of the European Union. We place these expectations on you, the young people,” said Ms Yatesniuk to the forum participants. She mentioned that the current 2nd Youth KSF has become a logical next step to the international Kyiv Security Forum, held by the Open Ukraine Foundation for over six years in a row.

This time the main topic under discussion was the issue of good governance as the only way to the EU. “Good governance created the developed and prospering countries where we study, work efficiently, and lead productive and happy lives. However, in addition to substantial changes, good governance requires a great deal of responsibility from each of us,” said Tereziia Yatseniuk.

Natalia Nemylivska, the director of the NATO Information and Documentation Centre in Ukraine, underscored the relevance and good timing of the forum. “This is an event for you, the Ukrainian youth, and it is intended to promote a deeper understanding of the current situation and mechanisms in the area of effective anti-corruption strategies,” she said, adding a note that NATO is involved in this discussion as well.

Ms Nemylivska reminded the audience about the NATO’s Building Integrity Initiative, an example of the Alliance’s specific steps aimed to reduce corruption in the defense institutions of the countries engaging in this initiative, Ukraine included.

“I am certain that we are going to have a dynamic and intensive discussion today, covering various aspects of this issue, which will allow us to summarize and analyze the current state of affairs, realizing what our goal are and how we are going to reach them,” said the director of the NATO Information and Documentation Centre in Ukraine to the audience of the 2nd Youth KSF.
