During the dialogue with youth, the former German Minister of Justice paid much attention to the issue of human rights protection in Ukraine. For example, she cited statistics according to which Ukraine is ranked fourth in the world by the number of complaints to the European Court of Human Rights. At the same time Germany files only five to ten claims per year. Regarding the level of trust in courts, for Germany it is 85 %, while in Ukraine it is less than 10 %.
Herta Däubler-Gmelin emphasized that “every person should monitor their rights and demand them to be observed. Every citizen may address the European Court of Human Rights and appeal against the decision of national courts. Ukrainians have to learn their rights. This should be a systematic everyday work!»
According to Herta Däubler-Gmelin, the fundamental human rights are based on ensuring the social safety and civil society development that are mandatory on the national as well as international level.
The Chairman of the Committee for Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid highlighted that in Ukraine it’s necessary to reform the judicial system. «If the Government of Ukraine approves the amendments made by the Council of Europe and Venice Commission with regard to judicial reform in Ukraine then it’s going to be the next step to the success of Ukraine», she said.
